Balayage vs. Highlights: What’s Actually the Difference?
If you’ve ever sat in a consultation and heard both terms used almost interchangeably, you’re not alone. Balayage and highlights are two distinct colouring techniques, and choosing the right one depends on your hair type, lifestyle, and the finish you’re after.
What are highlights?
Traditional highlights use foils to isolate sections of hair and lift them to a lighter shade. The result is uniform — brighter, consistent panels of colour from root to tip. Foil highlights are precise and great for dramatic lift or blonding.
What is balayage?
Balayage (French for “sweep”) is painted freehand onto the surface of the hair. The colour is concentrated at the mid-lengths and ends, leaving the roots natural. The result is softer, more grown-out, and far less maintenance-intensive than foil highlights.
Which one is right for you?
If you want a low-maintenance, sun-kissed finish that grows out beautifully, balayage is usually the better fit. If you want more brightness, more coverage, or a bolder contrast, highlights — or a combination of both — may be the answer. At your consultation, we’ll look at your texture, base colour, and how often you realistically come in for touch-ups before deciding.
There is no single right answer — only the right answer for you.
