How to Maintain Your Colour Between Appointments

By Bahareh·October 5, 2026·3 min read

Colour-treated hair has specific needs that most drugstore shampoos aren’t designed to meet. A few simple changes to your routine can significantly extend the life of your colour.

Switch to a sulphate-free shampoo

Sulphate-free formulas clean without stripping the pigment molecules that live in your hair shaft. Look for “sulphate-free” or “colour-protect” on the label — it makes a genuine difference.

Wash less, condition more

Washing every day accelerates colour fade. Try every other day, or use dry shampoo in between. When you do wash, always follow with a moisturising conditioner from mid-length to ends.

Add a weekly treatment

A bond-building or hydrating mask once a week replaces moisture lost during the colouring process. Olaplex No. 3 is a popular at-home option — use it before your wash, not after.

Protect against heat

A heat protectant spray before any tool touches your hair is non-negotiable. Heat opens the cuticle and speeds up colour loss significantly. Apply it while your hair is still damp.
